Your own website wins with repeat buyers
New customers are hard work: ads, content, lives, vouchers. Customers who already bought and liked your product are an asset. This article covers why repeat buyers matter, why your own website suits building that relationship, and how part of the platform-fee saving can fund a loyalty programme, while staying honest about the website's own costs.
1. Why repeat buyers matter
Harvard Business Review (Amy Gallo, 2014) notes that, depending on the study and industry, acquiring a new customer can cost 5 to 25 times more than retaining an existing one (HBR, 2014). The same article cites research by Frederick Reichheld of Bain & Company: increasing customer retention by 5% increases profits by 25% to 95% (Reichheld, Bain & Company). The figure varies by industry; it is not a promise for every shop.
These are general research findings, not a promise for every shop.
2. Platform vs website: who owns the relationship?
On a marketplace, the platform controls the buyer relationship, and you must not pull buyers off-platform (TikTok Shop prohibits redirecting traffic; penalties apply).
On your own website, for customers who come from IG, FB, your ads or directly: - You hold the customer data. - You can build an email/WhatsApp opt-in list, with consent.
PDPA (Act 709), general info, not legal advice: s.6 requires the data subject's consent to process personal data; s.43 lets customers require you to stop processing their data for direct marketing. In practice: a clear, unticked opt-in at checkout, a stated purpose and an easy unsubscribe. See pdp.gov.my.
3. Eight loyalty ideas
Points · member tiers · a repeat-purchase voucher · a birthday reward (with consent) · a referral reward · early access · bundles · free shipping above a threshold.
4. EXAMPLE (CONTOH): who pays for loyalty?
CONTOH / example only, not a real seller. One RM50 order, Women's Tops, shipping excluded.
| TikTok Shop (Marketplace, non-BXP) | Website: FPX | Website: card | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform / gateway fee | RM9.89 (14.91% + 3.78% + RM0.54) | RM1.25 (published FPX B2C) | RM2.50 (published 3% + RM1) |
| 5% loyalty | — | RM2.50 | RM2.50 |
| Net per order | RM40.11 | RM46.25 | RM45.00 |
| vs TikTok | — | +RM6.14 | +RM4.89 |
Gateway rates come from Malaysian providers' public pricing pages (toyyibPay, Billplz, senangPay, Stripe MY) (example range: FPX B2C RM1.00–RM1.25; local cards 1.5%–2.5%, or 3% + RM1 with some providers).
Website costs to count (to keep it fair): - Loyalty plugins need a WooCommerce shop (Growth or Signature). With Care Kedai at RM490/month and +RM6.14 per order, you need about 80 repeat orders a month to cover it (about 101 at card rates, +RM4.89). Year-1 hosting + domain are included; from year 2 they renew at cost. - Traffic isn't free: ads, content, time. It varies by business, so it's not modelled. Repeat buyers can be reached through your own opt-in list. - Gateway fees and chargebacks still apply.
So: lower platform risk and more margin per order, not free money. Works best alongside TikTok/Shopee.
5. Loyalty on WooCommerce (general)
- WooCommerce coupons for repeat, birthday and free-shipping offers.
- Points/loyalty plugins: search the WooCommerce Marketplace or WordPress.org for "points and rewards" or "loyalty", and compare features, reviews, last update and current price. We don't recommend a specific plugin here.
- Opt-in: a consent checkbox at checkout, consent records, unsubscribe links.
- Start small: one repeat voucher first, measure, then add points or tiers.
6. Build from your own traffic
Never invite TikTok Shop or Shopee buyers to buy on your website (chat links, parcel inserts, etc.). That's a policy and penalty risk. Build loyalty from direct, social (IG/FB) and website customers.
FAQ
Is keeping customers really cheaper than finding new ones? HBR (2014) says acquisition can cost 5–25 times more depending on study and industry. It's a general guide.
Can I message TikTok buyers to join my website membership? No. That counts as redirecting traffic and risks penalties.
Do I need consent for WhatsApp/email promos? Act 709 requires consent, and customers can opt out of direct marketing. General info, not legal advice.
What do payment gateways charge? It depends on the provider. Published examples: FPX B2C about RM1.00–RM1.25 per transaction, local cards about 1.5%–2.5%, some providers 3% + RM1.
Which package suits a loyalty programme? A WooCommerce shop: Growth (RM4,490; promo RM2,245) or Signature (RM7,490; promo RM3,745).
Is 5% loyalty required? No, it's an example. Pick a rate that still leaves margin after all your costs.
